Skincare: A Review (Michael Todd True Organics)

You like how I made the title of this blogpost sound like a play? (Well, at least I thought it sounded like the title of a very intriguing play.) So, yes, I'm not one to review beauty products very often, but my friend, Meg, owner of the hottest legs I've ever seen and creator of the very fun & criminally informative Meg's Make-Up (the type of site where people tell the truth about things...shocker - seriously, it's rare these days) asked me if I'd be interested in checking out a line of organic beauty products.

Cut to me staring at my facewash tube that was squeezed to the point of breaking (we're talking toothpaste tube-like rolling & bending to get the last bits) and a few moisturizer bottles that were getting a little light. So, of course I said yes!

Enter, stage right, a cast of interesting characters, all from Michael Todd True Organics. What can you expect from these products? They're made in the U.S. (job creation!) with certified organic ingredients without adding water. They are all free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, or artificial dyes. I was intrigued by the fact that these products seemed to be about as natural as you can get, aside from rummaging around in your fridge and wondering if you should try putting raw egg whites on your face like that recent beauty article suggests. (Yes, I've considered doing that.) Anyway, for a bit more info on the organics, check this out:

Meanwhile, I'll say this: If I'm going to review something, I'm going to give it a real go. So, I spent some time labeling all the products with days of the week I would use them and whether I would use them during the day or at night. I vowed I would give myself at least 2 weeks. Husband Charles was bewildered by my OCD and impressed by my seriousness. I felt like a crazy person...wait, I am a crazy person. Crazy about skincare. (Yep, I just did that.)

So, let me introduce you to my cast of characters & give you my honest opinion of each. Ready? (Links to each product are in the captions!)

Charcoal Detox Cleanser
Usage: Day & Night - Everyday
I have to admit that from the minute I started using this cleanser, I was hooked.

The Bottom Line
The gel goes on smooth, the consistency is great for massaging your face (always a plus), it smells wonderful, and gives my face a thorough cleaning. It removes my make-up, but doesn't dry my face out. (VERY important!) After washing, I don't need to panic and quickly try to slap some moisturizer on because my skin isn't drying up at the speed of light.

I'm so used to products that have great lathering, but pull too much moisture out of my skin. This proved to me that you don't need too much lather to get clean. My pores have been singing its praises for two weeks now and I don't plan on stopping!

Pearl & Silk Mask
Usage: Night - Once a Week
I haven't really used many masks in the last few years aside from slapping some honey on my face from time-to-time for some moisturizing, so I was almost a little too excited to try out this mask.

The Bottom Line:
Has a great consistency and is easy to apply (which can be a challenge with some masks.) Because of the pearls in it, it had a gorgeous sheen, which never hurts.

As promised, after using it, my face was velvety smooth and seemed firmer. I've only used it twice so far (once a week - hey, I have a busy schedule), but it's been great each time. I'm going to continue and see if the firming effect continues. I don't think anyone would turn down firmer skin, am I right?

Warning: Try not to be around anything funny when it's drying. It tightens up, making smiling & laughing virtually impossible. Husband Charles was amused that I couldn't laugh.

Intensive Organic Eye Cream
Usage: Day & Night - Everyday
I'm the worst when it comes to eye cream. It was the one thing missing in my skincare repertoire, so I was elated to see this gem!

The Bottom Line:
The crows feet that were slowly developing around the corners of my eyes (I "smize" a lot) have basically disappeared. What a relief! This cream goes on so smoothly, absorbs quickly, and feels super-luxurious. The skin around my eyes has been thanking me profusely for the last two weeks. I'm never going to stop using this one...ever!

Warning: Try not to apply too much. The skin around my eyes got slightly irritated when I used too much (and it also made my eyeliner smudge because it was so moisturizing.) Take a tiny bead of it and distribute between both eyes. Problem solved.

Antiox Serum
Usage: Night - Monday/Wednesday/Saturday
I'm always nervous when things say "acid" since my skin can be on the sensitive side, but this serum was amazing. It helps fight free radicals with a plethora of vitamins & other magic. I think it's safe to say that we're all fans of magic, right?

The Bottom Line:
There was a slight tingling when I first applied it, probably due to the alpha lipoic acid or other ingredients (I can't say for sure), but it wasn't unpleasant in any way.

My skin was so supple after I applied a few tiny drops to my face, neck, and décolletage (yes, I'm using fancy words.) And I didn't need moisturizer afterwards. It's super-hydrating. Cut to the next morning, my skin was bright and soft! Great stuff!

Warning: I, personally, would avoid using it during the day since it can cause sensitivity to the sun.

Hydration Boost Serum
Usage: Day - Everyday & Nights - Friday
Ever since I moved to Los Angeles, the lack of humidity has wrecked my skin a little, so something that claimed to give me a boost of hydration? Sign me up!

The Bottom Line:
Holy Hydration, this was a miracle! Like the other serum, you don't need much though, when I'm feeling super dry, I've begun to apply a little more at night.)

My face, neck, and décolletage have never felt so supple in this city! Goodbye wrinkles, hello baby skin! And definitely no need to use any additional moisturizer, plus my BB cream goes on like a dream after I apply this and let it absorb.

Warning: When using it during the day, don't apply too liberally. I, naturally, tend to get shiny (like blind-you-with-the-glare-off-my-nose shiny) and found that applying too much during the day made my face a little sticky & way too reflective. I may have caused a few car accidents...and not in a "Whoa, she's hot" kind of way. I'm pretty sure blinding drivers is illegal.

Antioxidant Carrot Serum
Usage: Nights - Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday
This serum feels super luxurious and smells a little like carrots...being a carrot serum, I guess that makes sense.

The Bottom Line:
Love, love, love! Maybe it's because I have combination skin, but I felt like this serum delivered moisture without adding too much shine to my face. I've been using it at night and have woken up to some serious silkiness.

I'm starting to consider using this as my day moisturizer also. Something to think about. I think this may be my favorite serum of the three!

UPDATE: I just tried using this for daytime use instead of the Hydration Boost Serum and it was perfect for my easily-shiny oil slick of a face. So, I've decided to use the Hydration Boost at night for extra TLC and the Carrot Serum for the day. It's made for normal to oily skin & helps reduce sebum production. I hadn't used an oil blotting sheet all day and when I checked my face in the mirror mid-afternoon, I wasn't met with a greasy mess. My skin looked as glowing and supple as I did when I left the apartment in the morning. AMAAAAZING!

..............

So, there ya have it. I take my skincare seriously and I think it's safe to say that I'll continue to use these products because I think they're scrumptious. I suspect, with continued use, I may just go the way of Benjamin Button and have the skin of a 5 year old in a few months. Not only that, but it's kind of reassuring to know that I'm not pumping toxins into my system. (Truthfully, I was never really that concerned, but if I can avoid them, why not?)

Hope you get a chance to try out the line...and if you have, would love to hear your opinions on which products worked for you! xo!

    1. Hey Anonymous Person,

You have to remember that a few factors are at play here:
      1) I didn't have crag-like crow's feet...they were light wrinkles, but probably ones that would have gotten worse with time
      2) I didn't use ANY eye cream of any kind prior to using this product
      3) I'm Asian...and as weird as that sounds, in general, we aren't super wrinkly...at least, not in our early 30's

So, to tell you the truth, my wrinkles DID disappear. To be fair, when I smile, I can still see lines (granted, if I didn't get lines around my eyes when I smile, that would be kind of disturbing and botoxy), but when I'm not smiling, the wrinkles are nowhere to be found.

I don't just write things if they're not true and I don't get paid to write these things either, so I'm sorry if it sounds crazy and fake to you, but my light wrinkles aren't there anymore.

      Cheers,
      N

    1. Hey there!

Hmmm. Strange. You should be able to just pop the top off and pump the product out. I think the first time I used it, I accidentally unscrewed the pump, but once I got it back on, it worked. You may need to turn it upside down to get the product out.

Let me know if you're still having problems! Also, which serum did you get? I'm curious if it's one I haven't tried yet! Enjoy!

    1. Hey there!

In the beginning, I mentioned my friend Meg (of www.MegsMakeup.com).
She actually gave me the opportunity to try to products out.
I didn't pay for them, but was in no way forced to write a positive review or a review at all.

I did it because I was impressed with the products.
Rest assured, I'm not the type to write something just because.
Everything I write about on my blog is how I feel/what I think about things in all honesty.

I'm still using the products even now and I still love them! :)
The eye cream, the charcoal detox cleanser, and the antioxidant carrot serum are my top 3 choices.
For once I'm not feeling dry (or wrinkly), but not feeling crazy oil and shiny either.
I'm a sufferer of dry, but oily skin, so this has been a real savior for me!

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me!

  4. I have combination skin and when the products I used for acne as a teenager just didn't work anymore (and harshly dried out my skin) I spent so much time researching and trying different products to find something that would help with mild adult acne and yet not dry out my skin. I'm so happy I found Michael Todd True Organics. My skin is clear and so much healthier looking and is not dry and flaky anymore. And what I love more is that it's organic and made in the USA =)

    1. I totally agree with you there!

I have dry/oily combo skin...sometimes my skin feel dry, but is STILL oily somehow. (It's a mystery...and an annoying one!)
I definitely still get break outs from time to time and this line has proven to help.

I'm SO happy to hear it's helping you too! And, yes, agree on the organic & made in the US stance!
If you can avoid toxic chemicals, why not? Am I right? :)

Cheers to you and your gorgeous skin! Happy New Year!

  5. I've been using the Rose Mask and Eye Treatment for about a week. My other orders just came in today and I am anxious to see how they work for me. Washed my face right away with the Honey & Oat Cleanser. It took off all my makeup in one go.
I am fair, mature-skin. So far I love the products. And all the samples have smelled wonderful too and seem like another great way to test out and see.
My air-pump on one container isn't working either and I've contacted MTTO. Hope to hear about replacement.
Thanks for this forum and hope to share more news once I've used them all a while.

    1. Hey there, Wendy!

How are you liking the eye treatment? I haven't tried the Rose Mask, but would love to hear your take on it!

Sounds like you've given a lot of the products a try. Happy to be hearing from another MTTO fan!
That Honey & Oat Cleanser sounds heavenly. Might take a look at that once I'm done with the Charcoal Detox Cleanser.
Gotta mix it up once in a while.

Cheers to beautiful skin in the new year!

    2. Hi Nami,
Still going with all my purchases. Loving the masks! Both Rose and the Pearl & Silk.
Am having strange recurrence of chin & marionette-line breakouts (unheard of for me) and trying to nail down the Why/Hows...I have been diligent with cleaning any tools & my phone...it's kind of freaking me out, but hoping that maybe my new skincare regime may be really cleansing the pores. (?) Or, clogging. (?)
Love the smell of the Skin Defender cleanser (AHA=breakouts?). Use Liposome Antioxidant Moisturizer (love) with Hyaluronic Acid +C underneath. Eye treatment I must start using religiously 2x per day in hopes of results. Can't really say I've seen anything noticeable yet.
Sample-wise I love the smell & feel of Citrus Cream moisturizer, used Jojoba Charcoal scrub as temporary mask, Clay mask (yeowza) bit stingy at first, Hydration Boost serum enlarged my pores, Charcoal mask...my routine I'm going to keep a close eye on to determine skin eruptions...can't see how mostly natural would cause this, but hormonally speaking (menopause) could also be the culprit.
Sorry so wordy, just wanted to respond with my 2 cents.
Let me know the latest w/you & MTTO products! xo

    3. Hey there, Wendy!

Glad to hear things are going well. Regarding chin & marionette-line breakouts, I've been dealing with those too lately!!! (SO STRANGE! COINCIDENCE?...probably) But I get breakouts in that area once in a while. I recall an aesthetician telling me that it was most likely hormonal. I hadn't even linked it to that until I started noticing when they would pop up. (Conveniently once a month, if you know what I mean.)

As for the products I've been using, my favorites have definitely risen to the top. The Intensive Organic Eye Cream, the Charcoal Detox Cleanser, the Antiox Serum, and the Antioxidant Carrot Serum are my favs. I use the Hydration Boost once in a while when I'm feeling SUPER dry and I barely use the mask because I'm kind of lazy. (At least I'm honest.) Good to know about the pore-enlarging with the Hydration Boost. My pores are prone to getting big, so I guess I should keep it to minimal usage.

All in all, my skin has been really happy. I actually recommended the line to my friend, Jenna, recently and her skin (prone to breakouts) has been doing much better too!

Meanwhile, I need to try some of the products you've been trying. What would your top 3 be? Just so I can narrow it down if I feel like picking up more product. :)

Thanks for following up, by the way! I really appreciate it. I'm always on the lookout for products that work! (Aren't we all?)

  13. I also have combination skin like you and also used to have trouble finding the right balance of moisture on my face. My dermatologist said the Lady Soma Renewal Serum is the sure thing for women with combination skin. Reading the ingredients, it contains multiple anti-oxidant and it is good for combination skin. So I try it for my fine lines on my forehead. It is great. My skin gets smoother and brighter, and the lines are getting less.

Its also a serum, so its great under makeup.

  15. Hi! I'm definitely looking into these products now, because of this glowing review! I was wondering though, if anyone can say anything about there products by calling them natural, organic, herbal and even excluding ingridients what should I do to avoid toxins in other areas of cosmetics, like hair products and makeup? I understand that this probably isn't your expertise, but you found that great video and I am concerned. Please post anything you learn! I know I'll be back =)

    1. Hey there!

      Sorry for the heinous delay!

I know there are sites out there that check on the level of naturalness of products. You might want to do a google search to see if you can find one. These days it's hard to know what is actually organic/natural and what just says it is. It's tricky, but hopefully, you can find a source.

That was probably not the best answer.
I'm currently battling the flu, so you'll have to forgive me.
If you find any sites, please share! :)

Your review was very helpful but I was wondering, do you think it would be appropriate for the skin of an 18 year old? 1. Hey there, Brooke!

Well, I'll be honest. I had acne at 14 and it's usually hormonal, so I can't make any promises.
However, I will say that these products have been known to significantly help acne.
Since I'm 32 and only suffer from the occasional pimple at this point (girl, you shoulda seen me at 14 - it was REALLY bad) I can't say for sure, but doing some google searches might help.

I've seen some miraculous changes in people's skin. :)
If you're suffering from severe acne, it may also be worth seeing a dermatologist.
      I didn't when I was young, but I sure wish I had. :)

Good luck and let me know how everything goes!

  24. Hey!

Thanks for the review. I ordered the Discover Sensitive Skin kit. I have rosacea on my face and this stuff did not help at all. It actually made my face break out when I've never had an issue with acne before, and my face is on fire half way through the day.

I'm in the middle of trying to see if they can refund me, but you have to pay a $10 restocking fee if you don't order anything else, and you have to pay for return shipping. Since the product itself was only $30, this seems a bit pointless. Their customer service is a bit confusing, as I've had three different people reply to my emails instead of being able to talk to one person.

I'm not trying to be a Debby Downer, I'm just sharing my experience so other people know. I was really looking forward to this stuff too so I'm a little disappointed by it all.

Thanks and congrats to all that it worked for!

  25. Hi.
I use the anti aging line for Michael todd because I have rosacea and the acne line might be too strong for my sensitive skin. So far I have seen positive changes to my skin, and trust me I have tried many of the top products and spent nearly a grand on useless products that made my face worse. I don't receive free products from them and I bought all michael todd line from livingsocial which cuts the price by 75% when they do have it. https://t.livingsocial.com/deals/1237854?ref=email-jp&rpi=170532034&rui=101391261

I used retin a and benzoyl cream but it was too harsh and made my skin burn all day.
